NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover has captured footage of Phobos, one of Mars’ moons, passing in front of the Sun. The event, observed on August 12, 2026, marks the 1,948th Martian day, or sol, of the rover’s mission.
The animation, created from images taken by the rover’s Mastcam-Z camera, shows the silhouette of Phobos as it transits across the face of the Sun. NASA states the animation has been tinted to simulate how a human would perceive the event.
The observation occurred on the 1,948th sol of the Perseverance mission, which landed on Mars in 2021. Phobos, along with Deimos, are the two small, irregularly shaped moons orbiting Mars.
