The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) took possession of mobile phones belonging to members of the Pakistan national team before the final Test match against England at Edgbaston. The move has raised questions about player privacy and the PCB’s authority over personal devices.
According to a report by Pakistani 365 News, the PCB has the players’ devices and will retain them until the conclusion of the Test. The identities of the players involved have not been revealed, and the PCB has not publicly stated its reasons for seizing the phones.
International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations already impose restrictions on mobile phone use in restricted areas during matches, such as dressing rooms. Players are expected to store their devices securely before entering these areas to protect match integrity and prevent unauthorized communication.
The ICC Anti-Corruption Code grants anti-corruption officials broader powers during formal investigations. These officials can demand access to a player’s mobile device, including phone records, text messages, and other electronically stored data, if there are reasonable grounds to suspect it contains relevant information. Failure to comply with such a demand can result in disciplinary action.
However, there has been no confirmation that the PCB’s actions are connected to an anti-corruption investigation, or that any player has been accused of an integrity offense.
