Manchester United head coach Eva Olid acknowledged the challenges facing her team after consecutive defeats at the beginning of the new season. The Red Devils lost 2-1 to London City Lionesses and then 5-0 to Chelsea at home.
Olid, speaking after the Chelsea match, stated, “We knew it would be difficult.” She noted Chelsea’s strength, having observed their previous game against Aston Villa, describing them as “incredible.” She recognized Chelsea as a well-established team that “knows exactly what they have to do.” Despite the anticipated difficulty, Olid expressed confidence in her team’s potential for improvement, though she admitted the opposition made that challenging.
Olid identified a lack of confidence and slow ball movement as key areas for improvement. She believes her players need “more mobility, more quick combinations under pressure,” explaining that under pressure they take “extra touches” and struggle with “basic simple position.” She emphasized the need to move the ball more quickly to avoid pressure and progress effectively, stating, “If we are slow moving the ball, these teams are going to come, but if we have quick movements, quick moving of the ball, we are out of the pressure.”
Beyond tactical adjustments, Olid highlighted the importance of player confidence. “One part is training, but the other part is confidence,” she said. “If the players start having that confidence, it will help a lot. If they believe and they have confidence in themselves, that helps with the ball.” She characterized the task as “a big job to do,” but affirmed, “I like the challenge.”
Manchester United’s next match is Saturday against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
