The New York Times is releasing a series of bonus puzzles each Wednesday for its Games and All Access subscribers. These puzzles build upon existing games like Wordle, Strands, Connections, and Crossword, offering variations with unique twists.
The new initiative aims to provide puzzle enthusiasts with more ways to play without the pressure of daily obligations. Jonathan Knight, The New York Times gaming head, stated, “Bonus puzzles are an exciting addition to continue diversifying our portfolio, with each puzzle built on mechanics that our solvers already know and love, but with novelty to make them feel distinct from the daily puzzles.” He also noted the puzzles are “designed for flexible, low-pressure play.”
Among the bonus puzzles are ‘Wordle in 1,’ a version of Wordle requiring players to guess five words using a single clue per round; ‘Connections 3x3,’ a smaller-scale version of Connections; ‘Colorful Strands,’ a visually enhanced Strands variation; ‘Mystery Mini,’ a creatively altered Mini Crossword; ‘Easy Mode Crossword,’ a simplified Friday Crossword published in the Easy Mode Newsletter; and ‘Special Crossword,’ themed crosswords released monthly, some in collaboration with celebrities like Nick Offerman, Jeff Tweedy, Bianca Del Rio, and Gabby Windey.
An introductory set of bonus puzzles is currently available to all users, but ongoing access will require a Games or All Access subscription, starting at $6 and $7.50 every four weeks, respectively. The bonus puzzles are starting to roll out now and will be available in the next few months.
