Norway’s King Harald V, 89, is in very serious condition, with the royal family gathered at his bedside, according to palace officials. The monarch, Europe’s oldest living head of state, has been hospitalized since August 17. The palace has stated he is receiving treatment for a rare blood condition, identified by the Straits Times as a bacterial infection.
The king’s condition prompted the cancellation of all planned royal events. The New York Post reports his health is now considered ‘very serious.’ The BBC and Independent also report the palace assessment of a ‘very serious’ condition.
King Harald V has been Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991.
