A catastrophic flash flood in Nepal on Wednesday has killed at least 359 people and left thousands missing, devastating northern mountainous regions bordering China. The torrent of water, rock, and mud wiped out entire villages, washed away roads, and destroyed infrastructure including dams and a border customs post at Gyirong Port. Nepalese Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal reported thousands missing, including pilgrims traveling to Mansarovar in Tibet, a sacred Hindu site. Approximately 400 of the 579 missing tourists are Indian citizens.
Nepal’s army has deployed helicopters for rescue operations, saving over 100 people, including foreign nationals, and delivering emergency supplies. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established an emergency response team with hotlines (+977-9744441227, +977-9744441228) and an email address ([email protected]) to coordinate assistance for foreign nationals. India has opened a special control room to coordinate with Nepalese authorities and has rescued 33 Indian workers from the Trishuli hydropower project, along with 21 people from Tamil Nadu; 285 Indian citizens remain uncontactable. In China, 558 people are missing at Gyirong Port, including 260 foreigners. Rescue efforts are hampered by damaged roads and thick mud. The Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage crossing in Tibet has been completely buried.
The death toll is distributed across multiple districts: 17 in Rasuwa, 28 in Nuwakot, 33 in Dhading, 132 in Chitwan, 30 in Gorkha, 22 in Tanahun, 82 in Nawalparasi East, and 15 in Nawalparasi West. The devastation extends to power infrastructure and dams, with the Gyirong Port immigration facility destroyed.
