Flash floods triggered by monsoon rains in Nepal have left at least eight people dead and 384 missing, including citizens of the United States, Britain, and India. The flooding, which began in Tibet and swept through a valley along the Nepal-Tibet border, destroyed homes, roads, and bridges. Across the border, Tibet has reported ‘major casualties’ and missing people in the neighboring county of Gyirong. Monsoon rains from June to September regularly cause deadly floods and landslides throughout South Asia. While the exact cause of the flooding is attributed to heavy rainfall, reports indicate the event may have been initiated by events in Tibet.
