More than 200 people at a summer camp in Lesterville, Missouri were airlifted to safety Friday as heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding and washed away nearby roads. The evacuations occurred at Camp Taum Sauk after the children became trapped by rising waters, according to Sgt. Eddie Young with the state’s authorities.
The extreme weather also prompted numerous other emergency rescues across the state. One person remains missing following the storms. The Washington Times reports that heavy rainfall battered parts of Missouri on Friday, triggering the need for these responses.
With more rain forecast, conditions remain precarious in southeastern Missouri. Roads have been rendered impassable due to floodwaters, complicating rescue efforts and limiting access to affected areas. The airlift operation at Camp Taum Sauk was deemed necessary after ground transportation became impossible. Authorities are continuing search and rescue operations for the missing individual.
