Microsoft has announced Project Zenith, a specialized Windows experience designed to enhance productivity for developers. The initiative focuses on providing a distraction-free environment and optimized tools for those building software, particularly leveraging AI capabilities.
Logan Iyer, CVP of Windows platform and developer at Microsoft, explains that Project Zenith devices will ship with a preconfigured Windows setup and a curated set of developer tools. These tools include Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot, PowerToys, WinAppCLI, and Windows Dev Skills. A key feature is the ability to run large AI models – 30B+ parameter models – locally and without usage limits, reducing reliance on cloud-based resources.
The first Project Zenith device, a miniature PC powered by AMD’s Ryzen AI Halo chips, was unveiled at IFA. Microsoft plans to release additional Project Zenith devices “in the coming months” featuring different hardware configurations. The operating system itself has been customized for developers, with File Explorer configured to display file extensions, hidden files, and full paths. Recently used files and folders, sync provider tips, and Start menu tips have been disabled. Long-path support is enabled, and the PowerToys Command Palette is activated by default.
According to Iyer, “Project Zenith is the result of listening to developers about what they need from Windows today, and where they want the platform to go next.” Microsoft views Project Zenith as a commitment to evolving Windows alongside the developer community as AI transforms software development.
