Michigan State began its football season with a 30-20 victory over Toledo on Saturday. Coach Fitzgerald’s team overcame a third-quarter deficit to secure the win.
The Spartans started strong, holding Toledo to a three-and-out on their first drive. Michigan State’s initial drive spanned 13 plays and culminated in a touchdown by Cam Edwards in the Wildcat formation, giving MSU a 7-0 lead. Alessio Milivojevic narrowly missed connecting with Rodney Bullard Jr. for another touchdown on the subsequent drive. Liam Boyd then added two field goals, extending the Spartans’ lead to 13-0 early in the second quarter.
Toledo responded with a 60-yard touchdown pass from John Alan Richter to Adjatay Dibbs after Charles Brantley was drawn in by a double-move. Boyd added two more field goals before halftime, bringing the score to 19-7. While the Spartans struggled in the red zone, Milivojevic completed 14 of 17 passes, finding four different receivers for three catches each. Edwards also contributed 72 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Toledo narrowed the gap with another touchdown from Richter to Dabbs, making it 19-14 after Boyd’s fifth field goal attempt was blocked. Michigan State attempted a fourth-and-1 conversion with a direct snap to Edwards in the Wildcat, but failed. Toledo capitalized with a 71-yard run by Connor Walendzak, taking a 20-19 lead early in the fourth quarter.
MSU’s offense finally gained momentum as Milivojevic connected with Bullard for a five-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal. Bullard also successfully completed the two-point conversion, giving the Spartans a 27-20 lead. Toledo’s field goal attempt with eight minutes remaining was unsuccessful. Liam Boyd added a fifth field goal with under two minutes left, extending the lead to 30-20. Michigan State then held Toledo on their final drive to close out the game.
