Following a last-second victory over Western Michigan, fans rushed the field at Michigan Stadium. Whether the school will face a fine from the Big Ten Conference remains uncertain.
The No. 16 Wolverines narrowly defeated Western Michigan 13-12 after a video review added one second to the clock, allowing JJ Buchanan to score a game-winning touchdown. Energized by the dramatic turn of events, Michigan fans entered the field.
Unlike the SEC and ACC, the Big Ten does not have an escalating fine system for fans storming the field. However, the conference has a policy allowing for a “discretionary fine” on a third offense for failing to “provide adequate security for visiting teams from their arrival for a game through their departure.”
In 2024, after Minnesota upset USC, the Golden Gophers were not fined. The conference issued a statement prioritizing “the safety and security of student-athletes, coaches and staff.”
As of the time of reporting, an email to the Big Ten asking about a potential fine for Michigan had not received a response.
