Four members of a Miami family – Mario Lamar, 80, his wife Lili Lamar, 79, and their grandchildren Sofia Sosa, 28, and Christian Sosa, 22 – died when their small plane crashed off the coast of Andros Island in the Bahamas on Monday. The Piper PA-34 aircraft departed Great Harbour Cay around 10:12 a.m. headed for Miami Executive Airport, with last contact at 11:04 a.m. near Andros Island, according to Bahamas police and the family. A search conducted by family members in their own vessels located the bodies on Tuesday, and they are now in the custody of Bahamian authorities for transport to New Providence.
Mario Lamar was an attorney with over 50 years of experience, and his daughter, Guilaine Sosa, practiced law with him. Christian Sosa recently graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a marketing degree and had been working as a sports photographer, including freelance work with the Los Angeles Rams. Sofia Sosa is also a graduate. The family had been enjoying a long weekend in the Bahamas, and the flight was a routine trip for Lamar, described by his niece Silvia Larrieu as a lifelong, experienced pilot. Larrieu indicated the plane was flying into the edge of a storm before reversing course.
Initially, the family expressed frustration with the lack of official search efforts, pleading for assistance. However, Bahamian authorities coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard, which deployed an HC-144 Ocean Sentry to assist. One of the bodies was discovered by a relative searching by boat. While authorities have not announced an official cause for the crash, the aircraft’s tail number is N212ML. The family has thanked those who assisted in the search and recovery efforts.
