Mariska Hargitay hosted the 78th Emmy Awards, marking a significant improvement over last year’s broadcast. The ceremony was praised for its celebratory tone and efficiency, a stark contrast to previous attempts at unconventional hosting.
The Emmys opted for a different approach this year after Nate Bargatze’s hosting last year was considered a disaster, and Jo Koy’s performance at the Golden Globes was similarly criticized. Hargitay, known for her role on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” embraced enthusiasm and demonstrated a clear appreciation for television, which proved successful. She performed multiple musical numbers and made numerous outfit changes, even prompting a pre-taped cameo from Taylor Swift.
The show moved several awards, including supporting actor and actress in a limited series (won by Linda Cardellini and David Harbour of “DTF St. Louis”), to the earlier Creative Arts Emmys. While this decision mirrored a controversial tactic used by the Oscars, the Emmys ultimately benefited from a shorter, more streamlined broadcast, finishing a few minutes under time.
One musical segment, a riff on Supertramp’s “Goodbye Stranger” celebrating series finales with Andrew Rannells, was deemed unnecessary, but a tribute to Dolly Parton, led by Reba McEntire, and honors for Catherine O’Hara and Rob Reiner were well-received. John Mulaney was also given time to riff before presenting an award.
Hargitay even playfully referenced the recent AMC ad featuring Nicole Kidman, with Kidman herself acknowledging the bit, despite Hargitay jokingly referring to her as “movie lady.”
