The upcoming Magic: The Gathering set, “Reality Fracture,” will explore a “what if” scenario within the game’s multiverse, fulfilling a long-standing request from fans. Head designer Mark Rosewater explained the set’s development was spurred by the story of Jace Beleren’s creation, “The Echoverse.”
Releasing October 2, “Reality Fracture” centers around The Echoverse, described as an artificial Multiverse designed by Jace Beleren. Wizards of the Coast states the set will feature warped cards, alternate character versions, and a reshaping of the game’s multiverse. Worldbuilding design manager Meris Mullaley noted that extensive research went into the set, with “Echoed Pairs” representing divergent paths for characters and planes.
Rosewater detailed the introduction of a new mechanic, “empower Jace,” inspired by the “amass” mechanic from “War of the Spark.” However, “empower Jace” creates planeswalker tokens, a first for common cards in Magic: The Gathering. He stated the mechanic proved popular in early playtests and remained a core element of the set.
Initially, the design team planned to set the expansion on multiple planes within The Echoverse. However, after feedback on “March of the Machine” indicated the story was too dispersed, they decided to focus solely on one plane to create a more personal narrative. The first plane considered was Mirrodin Pure.
