KDE released the beta version of Plasma 6.8 today, bringing numerous improvements to the desktop environment. The stable release is scheduled for October 14th, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the KDE project.
Plasma 6.8 focuses heavily on refinements, particularly for Wayland users. These include optimizations for vRAM usage, support for dwell clicker functionality, and implementation of the Wayland commit-timing protocol within KWin. Improvements have also been made to the Union theme engine, remote desktop support, and multi-GPU handling.
The beta also introduces kscreenctl, a new tool for managing displays, alongside server-side drop shadow support and enhancements for multi-monitor setups. A key addition to Plasma 6.8 is Kup, which will serve as the desktop’s backup scheduler.
