Inter Milan President Beppe Marotta expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete in the 2026/27 Champions League, despite a challenging draw. The team was recently crowned Scudetto and Coppa Italia champions and has reached two Champions League Finals in the last four seasons.
The Champions League draw, held in Monaco, placed Inter in a group with Liverpool, Club Brugge, Shakhtar Donetsk, and VfB Stuttgart. They will also face Real Madrid, coached by Jose Mourinho, along with Borussia Dortmund, Feyenoord, and Slovan Bratislava in away matches. Marotta stated, “This is always a fascinating occasion, the ninth year in a row that Inter are in the Champions League, so the team is now a fixed presence in the competition.” He also highlighted the “intriguing reunion with Mourinho,” calling the Champions League “the most important competition in world football.”
Inter bolstered their squad this summer with three England internationals: Curtis Jones (from Liverpool), Djed Spence (from Tottenham Hotspur), and free agent John Stones. Marotta explained the signings were based on evaluations by the technical staff – Piero Ausilio, Dario Baccin, and Cristian Chivu – prioritizing players with “quality and experience” and a history of winning titles.
Despite not winning the Champions League since 2010, and a disappointing exit in the play-offs last season against Bodo/Glimt, Inter aims high. Marotta declared, “We must always be ambitious, we are a team who had strong runs in the Champions League in recent years. We have quality, but also the right to dream.” He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the new competition format, stating, “We’re aware that our path depends also on how the other teams do.”
