A new study from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) reveals a breakdown in the 400-year climate connection between the Indian and Pacific oceans, with human-caused warming identified as a primary driver. Researchers found that while volcanic eruptions historically disrupted this link, current changes are more unusual.
Climate conditions in the Indian Ocean typically respond to changes in the Pacific Ocean, influencing rainfall, temperature, and atmospheric circulation across the tropics. Since the 1980s, scientists have observed a weakening of this relationship, with the Indian Ocean behaving independently of the Pacific. Determining if this change is unusual or part of a natural cycle has been challenging due to limited long-term instrumental records.
The WHOI team analyzed paleoclimate data from corals, tree rings, and stalagmites to reconstruct climate conditions in both ocean basins dating back to the early 1600s. Their research indicated a stable connection for most of the past 400 years, except for a period between 1810 and 1850. During this time, a series of major tropical volcanic eruptions appeared to weaken the Pacific Ocean’s influence on the Indian Ocean’s climate.
Researchers published their findings in *Nature Communications* under the title “Coupling of Pacific and Indian Ocean variability disrupted by 19th century volcanism.” The study suggests that recent human-driven climate forcing has caused an “exceptional” shift in the connection between climate variability in the two regions, exceeding the impact of past volcanic activity.
