A new insult is circulating among Gen Z, with a meaning that differs from its original definition. The term ‘larping’—originally referring to live-action role playing—is now used online to call out perceived inauthenticity.
According to USA Today, the term has evolved on platforms like TikTok and Twitter to describe people who are acting as if they are someone they're not, or exaggerating aspects of their personality. It’s become a widespread way for Gen Z to critique behavior they see as disingenuous.
The shift in meaning began around late 2023 and early 2024, gaining traction as a dismissive label. “If someone is really into something that most people aren't, or if they’re acting like an extreme version of themselves, you might call them a larper,” explains one TikTok user in a video discussing the trend.
The original meaning of ‘larping,’ which involves participants physically enacting characters in fictional settings, remains separate from this new usage. While the two meanings exist simultaneously, Gen Z’s application focuses on social behavior and perceived pretense. The term is often used playfully but can also be quite harsh.
