Former Newcastle midfielder Dan Gosling has attributed the club’s disappointing 2025-26 season to its summer signings in 2025, while also defending manager Eddie Howe.
Gosling stated that “discontent” had been brewing within the Newcastle camp since the beginning of last season. He believes that despite this internal friction, Eddie Howe was deserving of better treatment from the club and its supporters given his accomplishments.
Specifically, Gosling highlighted Howe’s success in securing two Champions League qualifications and winning a trophy for Newcastle. “After what he [Eddie Howe] had done to bring two Champions League qualifications and to win a trophy, I think he deserved everything from them,” Gosling said.
The former midfielder directly linked the club's downturn in form to the players brought in during the 2025 summer transfer window. He asserts that these acquisitions were the primary cause of Newcastle’s struggles throughout the 2025-26 campaign.
