Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha believes his teammate Andrey Santos will be a breakout star this season, despite the midfielder currently being behind others in the pecking order. Santos, a £48 million summer signing from Chelsea, arrived as the club revamped its midfield with the additions of Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba.
Cunha stated, "Andre Santos will be a breakout star this season. Fact, this guy is a very good player." He added that Santos is adjusting well to life at the club and that he is helping his compatriot settle in. Cunha noted Santos was “so excited to come” when the transfer opportunity arose, and that this excitement fueled his integration with the team.
Santos started in pre-season under Michael Carrick, forming a partnership with Mason Mount before Mount’s injury. However, he had a difficult competitive debut in a loss to Hull and was subsequently dropped in favor of Kobbie Mainoo. With Baleba nearing a return from injury, Santos’s position in the squad is further threatened. Despite this, Cunha remains confident in Santos’s abilities.
Cunha explained, “We don't need to put so much pressure on him to develop, but I know him from the national team and then all the skills he has. He's an amazing guy, so lovely, and yeah, I think that will be a fact. He will surprise many eyes this year.” Manchester United hopes to participate in 60 matches this season, potentially providing Santos with opportunities to prove his worth, alongside potential openings due to injuries or other factors.
