CircuitMess, founded by Albert Gajšak, is launching a new version of its build-it-yourself phone, the MAKERphone 2.0, on Kickstarter. The device allows users to assemble a working 4G mobile phone and learn to code on it. A key improvement over the original is the elimination of soldering, making it accessible to a wider range of builders, including children as young as 11.
The MAKERphone 2.0 features an ESP32-S3 dual-core processor, 4G LTE connectivity with 2G fallback, a 1.77-inch color display, and a 1000 mAh battery with USB-C charging. It includes a 12-key numpad, navigation joystick, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Storage is provided via a microSD slot, and the phone supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The device also features a UMAX modular connector for expansion.
The kit is currently available on Kickstarter for $119 for super early backers, with a retail price of $169. CircuitMess emphasizes that the phone is designed to be assembled from a box of parts with a build guide, resulting in a fully functional device capable of making calls and sending texts over 4G LTE. While 4G may seem outdated compared to 5G, the company notes the device isn’t intended to replace a smartphone and 5G isn’t necessary for basic functionality.
The phone’s coding capabilities include MicroPython, Arduino C++, and a new AI-assisted coding tool called VibeBoy. The modular design allows for the addition of extra hardware, expanding the phone’s functionality beyond basic communication.
