Spanish prosecutors in Ceuta report nearly daily sexual assaults have occurred since the end of July, coinciding with a surge in migration to the Spanish exclave. Silvia Rojas, Ceuta’s chief prosecutor, stated 23 sexual assaults have been recorded since the end of July, amounting to almost one case per day, according to El País. Nine of these assaults involved children. Most migrants have returned to neighboring Morocco, but as many as 5,000 remain in Ceuta, according to the BBC. Rojas added that migrant girls are “particularly vulnerable because of their irregular status in the territory.”
Reports indicate the influx of migrants began at the end of July, described as an ‘invasion’ by some right-leaning outlets. While the number of migrants has decreased, the reported incidents of sexual assault continue to occur. The BBC reports most migrants have returned to Morocco, while GB News frames the events as occurring after a ‘migrant invasion.’
