St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker expressed a desire to serve as a role model and inspire increased participation in baseball among Black children following his victory at the Home Run Derby.
Walker’s win at the recent derby is more than just a personal achievement for the Cardinals outfielder. He hopes it will resonate with young Black kids who may not see many players who look like them in Major League Baseball. Walker wants to change that, and believes his success can be a catalyst for increased interest and participation.
According to ESPN, Walker stated, “I just want to be one of those guys… I want little Black kids to turn on the TV and say, ‘I want to be like Jordan Walker.’” He views his platform as an opportunity to encourage more Black youth to pursue baseball, potentially increasing diversity within the sport. The outfielder hopes that seeing a successful Black player compete – and win – in a high-profile event like the Home Run Derby will motivate them to pick up a bat and glove.
