Actor Billy Porter is taking on the roles of director and star in an upcoming biopic about Black queer author and activist James Baldwin. The project stems from Porter’s belief that a person with similar lived experiences is best suited to tell Baldwin's story.
Portrayed as a “woozily seductive mood piece,” the film will follow Baldwin’s life and work, exploring his impact on literature and the civil rights movement. Porter explained his decision to helm the project in a 2024 Guardian interview, stating, “If not me, who?” He further elaborated, “Who’s going to tell it better than the Black gay man who embodies that in today’s age?”
The film appears to be driven by a desire for authentic representation. Porter feels his own identity uniquely positions him to accurately and powerfully portray Baldwin's life and legacy.
