A U.S. federal appeals court has ordered a halt to construction of the $400 million ballroom planned for the site of the demolished East Wing of the White House, ruling that congressional approval is required for such development. The National Trust for Historic Preservation sued last year after the Trump administration tore down the East Wing to make way for the 90,000-square-foot ballroom.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit panel determined in a 2-1 vote that Congress retains control over funding for White House development projects. While construction can continue on below-ground installations related to security, all other work must stop. The ruling specifies that the White House lacks the unilateral authority to proceed with the project.
The court has placed its ruling on hold for 14 days to allow the Trump administration to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. No right-leaning outlets reported on this development.
