Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the public preview of Amazon Linux 2027, the successor to Amazon Linux 2023. The new distribution features a Linux 7.1 kernel and is optimized for performance on AWS cloud workloads.
Amazon Linux 2027 packages are built with several performance enhancements, including the -O2 optimization level, Link Time Optimizations (LTO), and auto-vectorization. For x86-64 systems, packages target the x86-64-v3 architecture, assuming AVX/AVX2 support. AWS is also enabling Transparent Hugepages (THP) for malloc heap arenas on AArch64 Graviton instances to improve ARM performance.
The distribution utilizes the GCC 16.1 compiler, LLVM/Clang 22, and updated versions of Rust and Go. It also incorporates the DNF5 package manager and is based on Fedora 44 and Fedora 45. SELinux is enabled in enforcing mode by default, and the release includes new accelerator drivers.
