Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf is entering his second season with the team after a suspension and loss of guaranteed money related to an altercation with a fan. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has expressed his admiration for Metcalf, citing the receiver’s personal story and positive attitude as reasons for his improved performance.
Metcalf’s first season with the Steelers was impacted by a physical altercation with a Detroit Lions fan in December, resulting in a two-game suspension and a loss of approximately $45 million in guaranteed money. However, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office decided against pursuing criminal charges in May.
Rodgers, speaking on “Not Just Football,” stated, “DK is in a way better spot. He really is. Whatever was going on last year, I was joking in the spring, I was like, 'Happy DK is back.' I just love DK. I think he's a really interesting guy. His story is amazing. The way his stepdad showed up for DK and DK's mom and that family. Just hearing his story opened my eyes to who DK is.” Rodgers believes Metcalf’s improved mindset has positively impacted his play. He added, “He's been a different person, and as we see so often in this business, both positively and negatively, the personal can really affect the professional, and I think he's just played so damn good and he's just happy, and I just love for it DK because I care about him so much.”
Last season, Metcalf recorded 59 receptions for 850 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games. The Steelers acquired Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks in a trade and subsequently signed him to a four-year, $132 million contract extension. Rodgers has emphasized the importance of involving Metcalf in the Steelers’ passing attack.
