TLA Releasing has acquired distribution rights for Rodrigue Jean’s “Labrador, Autopsy of Silence” for both the U.S. and the U.K., following its success at the Tribeca Festival.
The film, which premiered at Tribeca, won three awards: best international narrative feature, best cinematography (awarded to Mathieu Laverdière), and best performance in an international narrative feature, given to Christopher Angatookalook. The deal was facilitated by international sales house H264.
Set aboard a cargo ship making its final voyage to resupply Inuit communities in northern Canada, the film centers around the murder of the ship’s cook during a storm. With 20 crew members as suspects, suspicion falls on Alupa, an Inuit mechanic and friend of the victim. H264 describes the film as subverting narrative conventions to explore themes of race, class, and sexual identity, revealing “remarkable emotional and thematic depth.”
H264 will release the film theatrically in Canada during winter 2027. Rodrigue Jean’s previous works include the short film “La Déroute” (1989), the documentary “La Voix des rivières,” the feature film “Full Blast” (1999), and “Lost Song,” which won best Canadian feature at Toronto in 2008. He also directed “Love in the Time of Civil War” (2014) and “The Acrobat” (2020), and co-directed “2012/Through the Heart” (2022).
