Blizzard Entertainment announced Saturday that “Diablo V” is in development and slated for a Spring 2029 release. The announcement was made during the opening ceremony of fan festival BlizzCon 2026 at the Anaheim Convention Center.
The new installment will be set a century after the events of “Diablo IV,” which released in 2023. In a franchise first, “Diablo V” will take place in a world where Sanctuary has fallen. According to Blizzard, “For the first time, players will enter a Sanctuary where Diablo has triumphed and its heroes have been defeated. At the heart of Diablo V lies a defining question: what must you become when the world has already fallen?”
The “Diablo” franchise debuted in 1996, and 2026 marks its 30th anniversary. Blizzard reports that the “Diablo” games, now consisting of four mainline entries, have garnered over 130 million players worldwide to date.
During BlizzCon, Blizzard president Johanna Faries also announced a “Diablo” animated TV series currently in development with Netflix. Blizzard stated, “After decades of bringing entire universes to life through our games, we’re partnering with some creative powerhouses to tell even more stories beyond gaming across new screens. A new animated series set in the world of ‘Diablo’ is in development with Netflix. More details will be shared in the future, but this is only the beginning, with even more taking shape across our universes.” Additionally, a new “StarCraft” open-world shooter game is in active development, targeting a 2030 release.
