Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) posted a record third-quarter profit of NT$763.1 billion, exceeding estimates and marking its sixth consecutive quarter of record results, driven by strong global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips. Revenue for the quarter reached NT$1.49 trillion, or $46.36 billion. The company anticipates fourth-quarter revenue between $52.3 billion and $54.3 billion, a 58% year-over-year increase at the midpoint of its guidance. TSMC’s operating margin reached 58.7%, demonstrating its pricing power in the current market.
Demand for AI chips remains strong, fueled by the adoption of agentic AI and open-source AI models, and semiconductors are expected to play an increasingly important role in the global AI supply chain. High-performance computing accounted for 68% of TSMC’s revenue in the third quarter, while automotive was the fastest-growing segment, with 23% quarter-over-quarter growth. Advanced technologies, defined as 7-nanometer and more advanced, comprised 79% of total wafer revenue, with 3-nanometer chips accounting for the largest share at 33%.
TSMC also announced plans for significant capital expenditure from 2026 to 2028, exceeding the previous three-year period, to support growing customer demand. Construction of its second fab in Arizona is complete, with equipment installation underway and mass production expected to begin in the third quarter of 2027, slightly ahead of schedule. The company’s free cash flow surged to NT$476.56 billion in the third quarter, up from NT$139.38 billion a year earlier. TSMC’s board approved a NT$7.00 cash dividend for the second quarter, and the company has outlined plans for a total planned investment of $265 billion in Arizona.
Our reading is that TSMC’s continued record profits demonstrate the company’s dominance in a market increasingly driven by AI technology. The substantial capital expenditure plans suggest confidence in sustained demand, while the Arizona fab’s progress indicates a commitment to diversifying production and potentially mitigating geopolitical risks. The reported surge in free cash flow and dividend payout signal a healthy financial position and reward for investors.
