Kaylub Giamanco, the father who fatally shot a 16-year-old gunman at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, described hearing children pleading for their lives as he approached the classroom. Three students and one teacher were killed before Giamanco intervened. Giamanco, 36, recounted how a chance decision to go home for lunch led him to the school during the shooting on earlier this month. He retrieved a handgun from his truck and, after confirming the threat, entered the school, crawling through a shattered window to reach the classroom where a teacher was struggling with the attacker.
Giamanco told Oregon Public Broadcasting he felt like the “last line of defence” and expressed anguish over those he could not save, apologizing to the families of the deceased children. He credited a teacher with creating the opportunity for him to intervene, stating, “I would love to give her a hug because that's a real true hero.” The victims were three boys aged five, eight, and eleven. In addition to the teacher killed, another child and teacher were wounded.
According to Giamanco, he initially believed the person with a long gun was playing a prank before witnessing the attacker fire at a pickup truck and then move towards the school. He informed emergency services he was going inside, stating, “I’m sorry, I have to go in. People are going to die.” After firing at the gunman, Giamanco placed his weapon on the ground and raised his hands when an officer arrived. He later contacted his wife and mother to inform them of what had occurred, saying, “Mum, I just had to take the life of what I think is might be a child because he ran into my daughter's school with a gun.”
President Trump praised Giamanco as “a great hero that went in and did the business,” while Giamanco himself has expressed a desire to meet with the victims’ families and grieve with them. He also reflected on the possibility that the shooter lacked adequate support, stating, “Sometimes there’s a child out there that didn’t have the love that they deserved.”
Our reading is that Giamanco’s actions, while tragic in their necessity, represent a desperate response to systemic failures. The article highlights the immediacy of the threat, children pleading for their lives, and Giamanco’s self-described role as a “last line of defence.” His regret over not saving everyone underscores the profound impact of the shooting and the limitations of individual intervention in the face of widespread gun violence. The juxtaposition of his heroism with the shooter’s legal access to a weapon and the ongoing investigation into school security suggests a complex web of contributing factors.
