Amazon MGM Studios has tapped filmmaker Tyler Nilson to write and direct the adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel “Counting Miracles.” Alan Ritchson will star as Army Ranger Tanner Hughes, a man who comforts families of fallen soldiers and embarks on a journey to find his father.
The film follows Tanner Hughes as he travels the country, providing support to families who have lost loved ones in the military. His search for his father leads him to a small town where he develops a relationship with a doctor and single mother. The story explores themes of belonging and confronting one's past as their lives become intertwined with a reclusive older man.
Alan Ritchson will produce the film through his Dancing Skeleton banner, alongside Denise Di Novi and Margaret French Isaac of Di Novi Pictures, and Theresa Park, Sparks’ longtime producing partner. Dancing Skeleton and Di Novi Pictures both have first-look film deals with Amazon MGM Studios, and Ritchson has a three-picture acting deal with the company.
Nilson’s breakout film was 2019’s “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” which he co-wrote and co-directed with Michael Schwartz. The film earned an Audience Award at SXSW and a DGA nomination, and was the highest-grossing independent film of that year. His most recent work, “Los Frikis,” released in 2024, was produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
Nicholas Sparks, known for novels such as “The Notebook” and “A Walk to Remember,” has had his works adapted into films that have collectively grossed over $750 million worldwide. His next adaptation, “Remain,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, is scheduled for release on February 5, 2027.
