President Donald Trump withdrew his nomination of Lance Schroyer to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after Republican Senator Rand Paul blocked a confirmation hearing, stalling the process. Trump had tapped Schroyer in June, praising his decades of law enforcement experience and stating he would be vital to the administration’s immigration crackdown. The White House did not provide an explanation for the withdrawal.
Schroyer’s selection was unexpected given his lack of experience leading a law enforcement agency, though he is close to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, having previously served on Mullin’s security detail and later becoming a senior DHS advisor. Schroyer also collaborated with ICE in Oklahoma, training troopers and being deputized to make federal immigration enforcement arrests. Both Mullin and Trump urged swift confirmation.
Paul, chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, delayed the hearing, requesting further information regarding investigations into the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis earlier this year. The Daily Caller reported Paul had also resisted publicly commenting on whether he supported Schroyer’s nomination, and previously attacked Mullin, accusing him of justifying an assault against Paul himself. Many immigration hawks also questioned Schroyer’s experience to enact mass deportations, according to Politico.
ICE has not had a Senate-confirmed leader since 2017. David Venturella has served as acting director since June, following the departure of Todd Lyon. Democratic Senator Gary Peters called for transparency and accountability from ICE, urging Paul to bring Mullin and Venturella before the committee. The withdrawal leaves unresolved whether the administration will pursue another nominee with different qualifications or experience, and whether Paul will continue to demand further investigation into the Minneapolis shootings before considering future ICE leadership candidates.
