University of Tennessee head football coach Josh Heupel announced that the Volunteers will honor the late Dolly Parton this season with stickers on the back of their helmets. Middle Tennessee State will also commemorate Parton with a jersey patch.
Dolly Parton passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80. Born in Pittman Center, Tennessee, Parton maintained strong ties to the state throughout her life. In recognition of her legacy, the University of Tennessee will feature an orange butterfly sticker on their football players’ helmets, with the word “Dolly” written inside. Parton frequently used the butterfly as a personal emblem, notably at her Dollywood theme park.
In a 2021 interview with W Magazine, Parton shared her lifelong love for butterflies, recalling her childhood fascination with their beauty and her enjoyment of chasing them in the woods.
Middle Tennessee State University will honor Parton by wearing a commemorative jersey patch at their home opener against Murray State. The patch will display Parton’s signature, including her first name, a butterfly, and her birth and death years. Both Tennessee and Middle Tennessee State will open their seasons on Saturday, September 5, which is also known as 9/5.
