Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Riq Woolen had a dominant performance in his first regular-season start with the team during their 24-22 victory over the Washington Commanders. He was targeted four times but allowed zero receptions or receiving yards across 37 coverage snaps.

According to Ryan Fowler of NBC Sports Philadelphia, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels completed 18 of 34 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns, but found little success when throwing in Woolen’s direction. The Eagles signed Woolen to a one-year contract during the offseason, and his performance illustrated why Philadelphia identified him as an unquestioned starter.

At 6-foot-4, Woolen provides defensive coordinator Vic Fangio with a rare combination of size, length, and recovery speed. These physical traits allow him to disrupt receivers at the line of scrimmage and recover when opponents attempt deep passes. While other areas of Philadelphia’s secondary experienced difficulties, Cooper DeJean allowed a touchdown, Woolen remained consistent, forcing Daniels to hold the ball or target other receivers.

One performance does not definitively prove Woolen’s fit in Fangio’s defense, but his debut was an ideal beginning. If Woolen can consistently shut down one side of the field, Philadelphia will gain greater flexibility in disguising coverages and allocating safety help.
