Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has resigned from his position to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. Hughes had been with Liverpool since June 2024, having previously held a similar role at Bournemouth.
Hughes oversaw approximately £200 million in transfer spending during the summer, including the signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris St-Germain. He was also instrumental in the appointment of Arne Slot as manager, who led Liverpool to a 20th Premier League title in his first season. However, Slot's subsequent departure and replacement by Andoni Iraola, with whom Hughes previously worked at Bournemouth, contributed to the change.
"I'll always follow and support the club with great affection, and I wish everyone involved nothing but success for this season and beyond," Hughes said in a statement released by Liverpool.
Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon stated, "We respect Richard's life choices and wish him and his family well in their next venture."
Al-Hilal spent nearly £180 million on Premier League players in the summer transfer window, signing Gabriel Martinelli, Ollie Watkins, and Cyrenscio Summerville for £60m, £51m, and £60m respectively. Hughes oversaw the £125m signing of Alexander Isak and the £116m arrival of Florian Wirtz.
This marks the fifth time Liverpool has sought a sporting director since 2022, following the departures of Michael Edwards, Julian Ward, Jorg Schmadtke, and the arrival of Hughes. Michael Edwards is now FSG's technical director.
