The Boston Red Sox may target Los Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto in a potential trade this offseason. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand recently suggested Neto as a prime trade candidate, particularly if the Angels pursue a roster rebuild.
Neto, 25, has demonstrated consistent offensive improvement over his four-year career, hitting 25 home runs in 140 games this season. He has posted at least 4.0 bWAR for the third consecutive season, with a .758 OPS, 69 RBIs, and a 117 OPS+. Last year, he hit 26 home runs, and 23 the prior season.
The Red Sox reportedly showed interest in Elly De La Cruz at the trade deadline, but a deal did not materialize. The possibility of a Major League Baseball lockout could impact trade activity this winter. However, if trades are permitted, Neto could be an attractive acquisition for Boston, as he has three years of arbitration eligibility remaining. According to Feinsand, “Neto’s name was a popular one leading up to the Trade Deadline, but the Angels opted to hang on to their shortstop while dealing away other controllables including José Soriano, Jo Adell and Ryan Zeferjahn. With three more years of arbitration eligibility remaining, Neto would be the Angels' most attractive trade chip if the new general manager – whoever that may be – wants to tear the roster down and start their own rebuild.”
While Neto has not yet earned an All-Star selection or any awards, his continued improvement makes him a “legitimate star-level talent,” according to reports.
