Mike Leigh, known for his character-driven British dramas, is preparing to release what he believes will be his final film, “Tender Loving Care,” after a 50-year career defined by artistic independence. He has consistently refused to compromise his vision, even when offered potential awards success by figures like Harvey Weinstein.
At 83, Leigh maintains the same principles that have guided his work since the beginning. He approaches financiers – including Netflix, which he says could easily fund him – without a script, plot, or cast, relying solely on his concept to secure funding. He recounted an encounter with Harvey Weinstein at the Savoy Hotel around 1997, after the Academy Awards, where Weinstein claimed he could have secured Oscars for Leigh’s “Secrets & Lies.” Leigh proceeded with “Topsy-Turvy” without Weinstein’s involvement.
Throughout his career, Leigh has been lauded as the “poet laureate of British working- and middle-class life,” focusing on seemingly ordinary subjects such as a factory worker reconnecting with her adopted daughter (“Secrets & Lies”), a backstreet abortionist in 1950s London (“Vera Drake”), and a cheerful schoolteacher (“Happy-Go-Lucky”). His process involves securing funding with only a verbal commitment before developing the script or casting.
“Tender Loving Care,” a study of two social workers and their families, is Leigh’s lowest-budgeted feature to date. He acknowledges contending with myosotis, a muscle-wasting condition that will prevent him from attending the film’s Telluride premiere, and suggests his energy and ideas are waning, making this likely his last project.
