Macron argues that while screens themselves are neutral tools, their impact on society requires attention. He notes concerns from parents about children’s attention spans, teachers competing with constant visual stimuli, and artists questioning audience engagement. He also acknowledges the experience of aimlessly scrolling through screens, losing track of initial intentions.
However, Macron stresses that the solution isn’t to reject screens, but to reshape our interaction with them. He believes cinema, series, and video games demonstrate the potential of screens to foster sustained attention, imagination, authorship, and shared experiences. He highlights the ability of these mediums to educate, connect, and inspire, citing examples such as films reintroducing audiences to classic literature like Homer, series sparking global conversations, and video games offering immersive worlds.
According to Macron, “We built a civilization of images. We should not resign ourselves to watching it deteriorate.” He asserts that because we created this digital world, we have a responsibility to reshape it, emphasizing that the remedy lies in changing our relationship with screens themselves. He believes that the moving image arts can offer a model for a more positive and transformative use of screen technology.
