Mohsen Gharaei’s “Falling House” has garnered distribution deals across Europe following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The film, starring Farhad Aslani, Laleh Marzban, Rima Raminfar and Elena Khakbazan, focuses on a family facing eviction and internal conflict in contemporary Iran.
Paris-based Paradise City Sales has closed deals for the film in France (Jokers Films), Italy (Wanted Cinema), and Spain (Karma Films), with further negotiations ongoing in other territories. The film received a positive reception in Venice’s Horizons section. Paradise City Sales also released the film’s first teaser.
“Falling House” follows Rashid, a suspended prison guard, and his family whose home is threatened by a redevelopment project. The story is complicated by Rashid’s eldest daughter, Ensi, secretly planning to leave Iran to pursue a modeling career. Gharaei describes the film as a story about “lost freedom” and choices made under fear and imposed destiny, created within Iran’s censorship environment. It is his follow-up to the 2017 drama “Blockage,” which won best film at Busan.
Jokers Films positioned “Falling House” within a tradition of Iranian protest cinema, comparing it to the work of Mohammad Rasoulof, Maryam Moghadam, and Saeed Roustaee. According to Jokers Films, “When a house about to be demolished turns into a prison, the entire family unit implodes.” Anastasia Plazzotta, CEO of Wanted Cinema, stated the film is “a courageous film that, through two generations of women, turns a family story into a powerful reflection on freedom and the struggle to break free from patriarchal structures.”
The film is a production of Seven Springs Pictures and RaeFilm Studios, alongside 3SIX9 Studios. Basis Berlin Filmproduktion, Zentropa Germany, and Solmaz Azizi also serve as co-producers.
