GNOME 51, scheduled for release on September 16, will introduce support for custom pointer acceleration profiles. The update, enabled through changes to Mutter and gsettings-desktop-schemas, leverages libinput’s capability to allow users to define acceleration settings for pointer movement and scrolling.
These custom profiles offer greater control over acceleration behavior at different speeds, providing an alternative to the default flat acceleration. Libinput documentation provides full details on configuring these profiles. The schema addition to gsettings-desktop-schemas and the corresponding Mutter merge, both initiated in February 2025, finalize the implementation.
The new feature will be included in GNOME 51, which will be the default desktop environment for Ubuntu 26.10 and Fedora Workstation 45.
