Shortly after the game, Gardner-Johnson repeatedly yelled, “Y’all want to spend money on C.J. now?” while making a choking motion with his hand, referencing ongoing contract extension discussions between the Texans and Stroud. Stroud had led the Texans’ offense to 31 points against the Bills. Gardner-Johnson had previously spoken about feeling disrespected by the Texans’ handling of his release during training camp last month.
In the locker room, Gardner-Johnson described the game as “bittersweet times” and stated he was “just focused on being a great team player and playing within my team.” This comment appeared to be a response to reports that his release from the Texans was due to his unwillingness to adhere to the team’s defensive scheme and difficulties meshing with teammates.
Gardner-Johnson recorded eight tackles during the game, but did not make any game-changing plays. He emphasized his commitment to playing his role within the Bills’ system, stating, “Kept the ball in front of me and got my teammates lined up…I feel like I give myself fully to God and changing the picture and image of my life. All that other s, don't matter no more.” He declined to comment on whether the victory over his former team felt particularly satisfying, even though the Texans’ defense allowed the most points since November 2023.
