Cynthia Erivo received a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday night for her performance in the film “Prima Facie.” The movie, directed by Popular on Variety White, follows Tessa, a rising legal star in London who defends those accused of sexual assault, and whose life is upended when she herself is assaulted by a colleague.

The film is adapted from a one-woman play by Suzie Miller. Jodie Comer previously won Tony and Olivier awards for performing the play on stage. Erivo’s portrayal of Tessa differs from Comer’s in that Tessa is a woman of color from a working-class background, navigating a historically white, male-dominated legal system.

Erivo explained that she and the filmmakers spoke with Black women barristers to understand their experiences. “We got the chance to meet a lot of Black women barristers. I understood that they sort of work in a different rhythm to everybody else, and the way they approach court is very much making it their own,” Erivo said at a Q&A following the premiere. “I wanted that for Tessa, I wanted her to have this outside life that influenced the way she approached.”

Daniel Ings, Elizabeth Dulau, and Simon Russell Beale also star in the film, which is considered one of the most promising sales titles at TIFF.
