Amita Rao, star of the FX comedy ‘Adults,’ spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s second season, which premiered August 27th. Rao plays Issa, and she discussed the complex relationships between her character, Paul Baker (Jack Innanen), and Anton (Owen Thiele), particularly the love triangle that develops after Paul Baker marries Anton to secure his immigration status as he is Canadian. Rao expressed her interest in exploring the dynamic between Issa and Anton as best friends, noting that she and Owen Thiele discussed the lack of debriefing between the characters after the marriage. She also highlighted the show’s unique portrayal of Gen Z and the energy shift she felt when it premiered, contrasting it with her experience as a stand-up comedian.
Rao noted that viewers often mistake her for Issa, and while she doesn’t take it personally, she acknowledges that public figures become projections for audiences. She was drawn to the show because of its tight writing, funny premise, and the feeling that she could contribute creatively. She and co-star Malik Elassal felt a noticeable “energy shift” when the show first aired. Rao described the show as encapsulating a Gen Z ethos, something she hadn’t seen before in television.
When discussing the love triangle, Rao said, “What was always been interesting to me was the tension between Issa and Anton as best friends.” She and Thiele discussed what was said and unsaid between the characters, believing they should have had a conversation about the situation. Rao also stated, “People totally do believe that I am Issa,” explaining she can instantly tell by the way someone says hello to her. She added, “If people saw the art that I made for myself and were only able to read it through the lens of Issa, I would understand, but that’d obviously be just a little more uncomfortable.”
