A 28-year-old lab technician at Russia’s Anti-Plague Institute in Irkutsk Oblast died Thursday from “pneumonia of unknown etiology,” triggering a quarantine of nearly 200 people. Daria Shipilova was hospitalized and placed on a ventilator Tuesday before her death. Initial reports suggesting Shipilova died after accidentally breaking a vial containing Yersinia pestis, the bacteria causing plague, were later refuted by Russia’s public health agency, Rospotrebnadzor, which stated no such accident occurred. While early messaging included claims of plague from some officials, including a later-edited post by the head of Buryatia, Alexei Tsydenov, investigations found no plague-related microorganisms in Shipilova’s samples. As of Monday, nearly 200 quarantined contacts tested negative for plague, with only two cases of COVID-19 and two of rhinovirus identified. Rospotrebnadzor chief Anna Popova coordinated the response, and Irkutsk Oblast Gov. Igor Kobzev declared the sanitary and epidemiological situation stable, anticipating the release of those quarantined next week. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov urged the public to rely on official information from Rospotrebnadzor rather than rumors. The cause of Shipilova’s death remains officially listed as pneumonia of unknown etiology, despite initial fears of a pneumonic plague outbreak.
