Eight people, including a one-year-old girl and an unborn baby, were killed in a shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday before the 45-year-old gunman took his own life. The shooter, who authorities have not named, was a grandfather and relative to seven of the victims, according to Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah. Julius Windham, the father of one of the young victims, said the gunman had not shown signs of distress, describing him as consistently smiling and appearing normal. The shooting unfolded after the gunman opened fire on two women outside the home, then retreated inside, where responding officers later found the bodies of five additional victims. Investigators recovered video and audio evidence indicating muffled gunshots from inside the house before the women arrived and began pounding on the door.
Lorah stated that the women who were shot outside likely “knew something was going on at that house,” and investigators are examining their cellphones for clues. While a motive has not been established, Lorah suggested mental health may have been a factor. Mourners gathered Sunday to place candles, flowers, and stuffed animals outside the home. Windham, wearing a T-shirt with pictures of the slain woman and children, expressed his grief and determination to remain strong for his family and community. A family friend told Cleveland 19 News of the difficulty in explaining the tragedy to surviving children, asking, “How do you even fathom something like this? How will you go home and tell your kids: ‘Hey, your mom, your siblings, your uncles and everybody else just got murdered by your grandpa?’”
Authorities have not released the names of the victims or the shooter, and Lorah declined to discuss details of what officers encountered inside the home, citing respect for the victims and their families. Erie is located approximately 120 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Our reading is that this shooting, while horrific, appears to be a deeply personal tragedy occurring within a family, complicated by the lack of publicly known motive and the shooter’s seemingly normal outward behavior. The reporting highlights the bewilderment of those who knew the perpetrator, and the immense grief of those left behind, particularly given the number of family members among the victims. The emphasis on the lack of visible distress from the shooter suggests a hidden internal struggle, though authorities have not yet confirmed this.
