The New York Yankees have partnered with Sportiqe to release a collection of athletic wear featuring lyrics from Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind,” timed to coincide with the team’s playoff run. The collaboration includes T-shirts, sweatshirts, and hoodies, with prices ranging from $52 to $109.
The official collaboration “pairs the music of hometown legend Billy Joel with the energy, pride and unmistakable passion of New York fandom,” according to a press release. Items feature Joel’s famous lyrics and the Yankees’ logo in navy blue. A vintage-inspired T-shirt commemorates Joel’s two sold-out concerts at Yankee Stadium in 1990, where he recorded a bestselling live album.
While known for his connection to New York, Joel has ties to both the Yankees and the Mets. He performed at Shea Stadium, home of the Mets, and a live album and DVD titled “Live at Shea Stadium: The Concert” memorializes that run. Joel has also performed the national anthem for the Mets on multiple occasions, including Game 3 of the 2015 World Series and Game 2 of the 1986 World Series. However, the Mets have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention this season.
The Yankees currently hold the first wild-card spot in the American League and are expected to make a postseason run. The Billy Joel x Yankees collection is available for purchase online, with women’s sizes ranging from small to XL and unisex sizes from XS to 3XL.
