Tennessee Republicans on Wednesday unveiled a proposed congressional redistricting map that would divide Memphis and Shelby County into three separate districts. According to the New York Times, the map slices up Memphis, a majority-Black city that makes up most of the state’s lone Democratic district. Politico reported that the proposed map would give the GOP a clean sweep of all nine of the state’s congressional districts. Newsmax noted that Democrats and Black leaders say the split would weaken the voting power of Black residents. The current Democratic-held district, represented by Congressman Steve Cohen, would be carved into multiple Republican-leaning areas, effectively eliminating the state’s only Democratic seat. The proposal follows the release of 2020 census data and is part of the once-a-decade redistricting process. Tennessee Republicans have stated that the map reflects population shifts and complies with legal requirements, while opponents argue it dilutes minority representation. The General Assembly is expected to take up the map in the coming days, with final passage anticipated shortly thereafter.
