Team USA and France will compete for the World Cup gold medal on Sunday in Berlin, two years after a controversial Olympic semi-final matchup. The U.S. seeks its fifth consecutive World Cup championship and to tie the Soviet Union’s record, while France aims for its first World Cup medal.
The final is set for 2 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on TNT, truTV, and HBO Max. Germany and Spain will play for the bronze medal earlier in the day at 10:30 a.m. ET on the same networks. The last time the two teams met was at the Olympics, where the U.S. won by one point after a potential game-tying 3-pointer from France was ruled a two-pointer.
Team USA advanced to the final with a 76-66 victory over Spain in Saturday’s semifinal, despite falling behind by eight points early in the game – their largest deficit of the tournament. Captain Breanna Stewart led the Americans with 16 points. The U.S. has won 35 consecutive World Cup games and is the four-time reigning champion. Jackie Young leads the Americans with 11.2 points per game, followed by Stewart with 11.0, who also leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per game.
France secured its spot in the final by defeating host Germany 86-64. Gabby Williams led all players with 22 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals. France’s defense recorded 14 steals and forced 25 turnovers. Williams currently leads France with 18.4 points, 3.4 assists, and 2.8 steals per game. France leads the tournament in scoring with 96.2 points per game, a 51.6 field goal percentage, and a 44.2 3-point shooting percentage.
“They’re a really tough team,” Stewart told TNT following Saturday’s semifinal win. “They’re shooting the (expletive) out of the ball this tournament, but we have a quick turnaround.”
The Americans haven’t lost a major international tournament game since falling to Russia in the 2006 World Cup semifinals.
