The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Monday, fueled by strong performances from Jose Siri and Zach Neto, as well as a key defensive play in the first inning.
The Angels started strong, with Jose Siri making a crucial relay throw in the first inning. After J.P. Crawford hit a leadoff single and Randy Arozarena followed with a double, Siri threw to Zach Neto at shortstop, who then relayed the ball to Travis d'Arnaud at home to tag out Crawford. “Honestly, it felt like a turning point before pretty much the game even started,” said pitcher Reid Detmers.
Siri and Neto also excelled at the plate. Siri doubled in the bottom of the first, scoring Mike Trout, and later scored himself on a sacrifice fly. Neto tripled in the bottom of the third, scoring Wade Meckler, and was then driven in by Siri, giving the Angels a 4-0 lead. Angels manager Kurt Suzuki praised Neto’s development, stating, “He’s becoming more consistent, right? You're seeing the consistency. You're seeing the engagement on both sides of the ball and it's the maturity. He’s learning, he’s getting better each and every day.”
Despite a strong start to the season, Detmers was working through potential fatigue after a 10-day road trip to the East Coast, though he did not offer it as an excuse. He was nine strikeouts away from reaching 200 for the season.
